The history of Volvo company

When economy meets dreams

The history of the most famous Swedish car company dates back to 1924, when an outstanding economist and businessman Assar Gabrielsson and the talented designer and engineer Gustaf Larsson met in one of the Gothenburg restaurants. Today, Volvo Car Corporation has factories in 19 countries and operates in over 180 markets around the world, being considered a pioneer in the field of security solutions.

Trademark of Volvo

However, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson shared more than just a passion for motoring. They both worked at SKF, the Swedish ball bearing factory. It was this company in 1915 that patented the Volvo trademark, which in Latin means "roll". This name later served as a showcase for the new car concern.
The new car, according to the concept of its creators, was to meet three basic requirements: it should have a simple design, be made of high-quality components and built from its own, and not purchased materials. These assumptions were to contribute to the creation of a car that would be reliable in the harsh Scandinavian climate and proved itself on bumpy Swedish roads. The so-called brand logo was adopted iron logo - an arrow pointing up, meant to symbolize Swedish steel, solidity and reliability.

Jacob Volvo The First

The official date of the creation of Volvo is assumed April 14, 1927, when the production line of the new plant in Hisingen left the first model ÖV4, popularly known as Jacob. The four-cylinder, angular convertible with 28 HP was modeled on American cars from this period and was extremely modern for its time. Despite this, the open roof did not work in the harsh weather conditions of Sweden, which is why the first Volvo was not enthusiastically received.

Volvo trucks during the war

During the war, Volvo mainly produced trucks and vans for the army. It was in the production of trucks that was probably the source of Volvo's strength. It was only in 1949 that the concern began to produce more passenger cars than trucks. For years, the same components were used in both types of vehicles.

Innovative technological solutions in new model of Volvo

On September 1, 1944, a prototype of the PV444 model was presented in Stockholm, the production of which was launched three years later. The new car quickly gained extraordinary popularity due to the use of innovative technological solutions. It was the first car with laminated windscreen and a self-supporting body.
