Jeep in US Army

The word "jeep" during the Second World War meant all lightweight all-wheel drive cars used in the US Army.
It became a brand and trademark in 1950, after registration by the company Willys-Overland, a producer of Jeeps.
But during the war, in addition to Willys-Overland, he also produced jeeps, and Bantam managed to produce the short series before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the US entering the war!
By the way, after Germany's attack on the USSR and the United States launching the Lend-Lease program, a certain batch of Bantam jeeps supplied the machinery of the Red Army and gained a better reputation there than the Willys and Ford cars delivered in parallel.

Jeep as civil

After the war, Jeep went to a civilian.
Lightly modified cars were tried to adapt to the needs of American farmers, equipping them with in a more modern engine and the so-called power take-off terminal, allowing the use of car mechanisms to drive agricultural and construction machinery.
Willys Station Sedan, a spacious station wagon with a Jeep-like silhouette, was designed for another clientele, but only with rear-wheel drive. Willys returned to armaments production during the Korean War, supplying the forces fighting there under the UN flag a new Jeep M-38.

Sport utility, and luxury

In 1953, Willys-Overland merged with the automotive part of Henry J. Kaiser's empire. Willys-Overland changed its name to Willys Motors, and the new Jeeps, already registered on the body, were sold in the joint Kaiser-Willys commercial network.
But two years later, no passenger cars of any of these two brands were produced anymore. Only off-road Jeeps remained. For the first time in the promotional materials of the manufacturer, which was now called Kaiser Jeep, the term "sport utility vehicle" was used to refer to off-road cars for utility and sport purposes. Over time, the popular shortcut SUV came into use today.
The first car, in the American sense, both sports and utility, and also luxury is a 1962 Jeep Wagoneer, with a six- and eight-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, independent front wheel suspension, power steering and of course 4x4 drive.
