BMW, i.e. Bayerische Motoren Werke is a German automotive group that has been manufacturing passenger cars, motorbikes and scooters since 1916. Not everyone knows that the company was initially known for its aviation production. The company logo itself, which has not been changed since the beginning, symbolizes not only the Bavarian flag, but also the rotating propeller.

It is believed that the concern was founded by two people - Gustav Otto and Karl Rappa. They both acted independently in the field of aviation. The first of them in 1911 founded an aviation school together with the Flying Machines Factory in Munich, where the BMW factory and the company's headquarters are located to this day.

In 1913, Karl Rappa founded, together with Julius Auspitzer, a motor plant - Rapp sp.z o.o.
Unfortunately, the engines produced had a problem with damping and sometimes cracked. So it was decided to look for ways to improve them, refined by Max Friz, who designed an innovative carburetor for the engine, thanks to which he surpassed all others. After that, Rappa's prestige decreased and the co-founders terminated the contract with each other. The company was renamed so that it would not be associated with Rapp. This is how Bayerische Motorenwerke GmbH was founded - Bavarian Works of Engine Co. Ltd.

Because the plant was small and had old equipment, it was connected to Otto. In this way BFW (Bayerische Flugzeug Werke) was created, which in 1918 was renamed BMW AG (Bayerische Motoren Werke).

After the First World War, the Treaty of Versailles banned BMW from producing engines for aviation, so the production of pneumatic brakes for trains began. In 1928, the first car was built at the BMW factory in Eisenach - Dixi 3/15 licensed by Austin Seven. Three years later, BMW 3/15 PS was created on the basis of Dixi. In 1933, the 315/1 model was presented. It was a roadster prototype. He caused a lot of emotions. It was a breakthrough for the brand.

After the Second World War the main production plant was bombed. However, they did not give up and the production of spare parts and agricultural tools, and later motorcycles. Cars also appeared, but they brought losses. There was an idea to sell BMW to Daimler-Benz AG, but the takeover failed. The following years are more and more successes. Not only in the production of passenger cars, but also in motor sports, motorcycles, bicycles.
