What are MOT tests?

This is a test of the Ministry of Transport, commonly known as "MOT". The technical review covers dozens of car inspections, from brakes and fuel system to lights, mirrors, seat belts, wipers and exhaust system. It does not include the condition of the engine, clutch and gearbox.

When should I do the MOT tests on my car?

Cars over the age of three must legally undergo an annual MOT test to demonstrate that they are functional. When the car is three years old (four years in Northern Ireland), it should be tested annually to check that it meets road safety and environmental standards.

Where can I do the MOT test?

MOT tests are conducted at approximately 21,000 authorized test centers nationwide, all of which have an official blue mark with three white triangles.
You can also get a technical review at your local examination center. These test centers usually do not carry out repairs or technical inspections. Thanks to this, they are impartial when checking the car - there is no commercial incentive to find problems.

How long does the technical review take?

The average MOT test takes 45 to 60 minutes, but there are several other things to consider.
First, if your vehicle fails the test and repairs are required, it will take longer. The test center cannot allow you to drive away from a car that has not taken over the technical inspection until the problems have been corrected, unless your current technical inspection certificate is still valid or you are taking the car to repair the fault.
Secondly, the test can take an hour or less, but even if there are no repairs, it does not mean that your car will only need to stay in the garage for sixty minutes. Test centers may require you to drop your vehicle early in the morning and pick it up when it's ready. This means that you should be prepared for a day without a vehicle.

How much does the technical inspection cost?

The Vehicle and Operator Service Agency sets the maximum fee that official test centers may charge for a technical review. It currently costs 54.85 GBP for cars and caravans and 29.65 GBP for motorcycles, but many garages cost less than this - sometimes up to 50% less.

The MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test your car met the minimum road safety and environmental standards required by law. This does not mean that your car will be operational for the next 12 months. You still need to take care of your car, including regular servicing. Always make sure your car is operational before journey!!
